Police Report a Spike in Car Accidents and Drunk Drivers

"It's the summer time people are off. People are enjoying their vacation time right now." Summer time fun for many turns into a nightmare. A high number of accidents is alarming officers as to what the summer might bring . Police tell us over 20 accidents were reported this weekend alone. Two of those accidents causing serious injuries to those in the vehicles. One accident taking place early Saturday morning along a Country Club subdivision forced rescue crews to use the jaws of life to remove 21 year old driver Oscar Martinez Jr. from the vehicle. He crashed into a tree and a concrete fence. Another one on the 49 hundred block of Loop 20 with driver Juan Tomas Guerra colliding into a concrete and a wooden light pole. One of his passengers identified by police as Emmanuel Jesus Diaz, was air lifted to a San Antonio hospital with severe neck injuries. Baeza said, "Again completely preventable accidents as long as they were driving in speed limit or depending on what road conditions were they should have had a problem in maintaining control of the vehicle." While police await toxicology results in those accidents, they report over a dozen people arrested for driving while intoxicated. Some even reported levels of almost double the legal amount of point zero eight. "I think the arrests speak for themselves in the fact that there is officers on the look for these people who pose a great risk to the safety of the community", said Baeza. With the 4th of July celebrations coming soon, police remind the community that a designated driver should be the someone who did not consume alcohol, not the one who is less intoxicated. "For whatever the reason is you are planning to have consumption of alcohol do not get behind the wheel of a vehicle." Carolina Garcia.
