Post Offices In Mirando City & Oilton May Close

By KGNS News

You may have already heard about the over 3,000 post offices that will most likely be closing their doors in the near future.
There are two close to home that are on that list: the post offices of Mirando City and Oilton.
Many people living out in the area say their lives will be greatly affected if those post offices do close.
Our Annette Garcia was in Mirando and Oilton and has their story.
They've been the only post offices in their small towns for decades.
“Its my everyday thing to come to the post office.”
So close, some decide to walk over almost every day.
In Mirando City and Oilton, mail doesn't arrive at homes.
Here, its PO Box pick-up's only.
“It’s so convenient for us. We’re so used to coming here everyday.”
Which is why so many people are saddened to know these two rural post offices are on the list of potential closings.
Two of the estimated 3,700 that could close their doors for good nationwide beginning in January.
Part of an effort to close a $20 billion gap in revenue by 2015.
“I came to Mirando 61 years ago. I’ve always gotten my mail here. To go somewhere else is unthinkable.”
If both the Mirando City and Oilton post offices were to close, the next nearest one would be in Bruni. And the people here tell me that although they will get used to the travel time, what they wont get used to is the cost to make the trip.
“That’s not fair.”
“For some people that may be more difficult. This is more centrally located between Aguilares and Bruni but I’m not the post master.”
The closures aren't set in stone yet but most know they're coming.
Until then they'll be here everyday.
“Sometimes I have mail sometimes I don’t but I like to check it anyway.”
The u-s postal service expects to begin closing the some post offices in January.
They are also talking about reducing the service days of all other post offices to five days a week all to cut costs.
