Wednesday night Pro 8 News continued with an exclusive in-depth look at the Border Patrol Citizen's academy. One of the most interesting sessions those taking part in the seven week course had a chance to experience had to do with the air boats. Pro 8 News reporter Brenda Medina took part in the academy giving us a close up at the efforts to ensure the South Texas border is secure.
24 hours a day, 7 days a week senior Border Patrol agent Felix Carlo along with a number of other agents detailed to the Border Patrol's Marine unit set out on the Rio Grande. They arm themselves with high powered weapons and a ceramic plate to stop high caliber bullets.
During the ride along agents received word of some dangerous activity happening along the river forcing them to make a quick u-turn.
"Situations happening in Mexico are very highly intense. We don't want to expose you people to this we're here to take care of you,” said Carlo. “We deal with that everyday and obviously we're trained."
Though tough to see through the Carrizo, agents have to rely on their keen senses.
"Our threat awareness is very high everyday at every instant that we're on the boat and off the boat,” Carlo added.”
As Pro 8 News crews headed down river they came across evidence that agents usually spot of those trying to make it in to the country illegally. "This device is being used very commonly here along the border,” said Carlo.
An inner tube not only used by undocumented immigrants and fugitives, but also drug smugglers lies slashed by agents to show they're aware of it.
"Most of the days we have a lot of activity, we can't disclose a lot of information for security reasons and obvious reasons but it's a very interesting job."
A trail also a clear sign of a landing where bags and clothing are left behind as the illegals try to blend in.
"With this remark it's actually not confirming that this traffic is getting away,” Carlo pointed out. “They will be apprehended further up."
The agents detailed to the air boats go through vigorous training in the Marine academy. Border Patrol officials said the fairly new program in the Laredo sector has proven to be an excellent deterrent giving them a close eye on the smugglers routes.
