Protecting the Wetlands

By KGNS News

The next city council meeting isn't set for another couple of weeks, but environmentalists are already seeking support on an item on the agenda.
It was several years ago, that we heard about some wetlands that Laredo town center was looking to develop a mall on; it didn't happen then, but it may happen now as they are now hoping to turn their lease into a complete purchase.
They have leased 88 acres of land to the city for the past several years; but its this 22 acres across from the airport on Loop 20 that environmentalist fought to preserve then and are still doing so now.
That's because they say the wetland acts as a filter for contaminants and toxins that when it rains stream down to the area before streaming down to Lake Casa Blanca.
Tricia Cortez says, “if the land is destroyed and paved over what does it mean for the hundreds of thousands of visitors who use the lake each and every year who want to enjoy the nature and peace of Lake Casa Blanca. It's a unique amenity to have here in Laredo.”
Those concerned about the wetland say they are not against development for retail, but want the city to carefully consider these 22 acres when selling and they are asking people to voice their concerns.
City Officials say they are open to hearing from the public especially since the sale has already passed its first reading.
The second reading is set for January the 22.
