Recent rains are affecting the Rio Grande and now flooding is expected. There is an official warning from now and for the next couple of days. This afternoon 5 .8 feet is what the water levels measured, but by Monday cresting is expected at about 25 feet in the downtown area. At Columbia Bridge, water levels today were already marking 15. 8 feet. Flooding of the Rio Grande occurs at just 8 feet. Possibly by tomorrow the river should cover most of the River Drive Mall and US Customs parking lots. All this according to the National Weather Service, who says low residences are threatened. But city officials are monitoring the situation and clarify that is not the case. Laredo Fire Chief Steve Landin says there is no threat to the population unless the public goes out there and puts themselves at risk. He cautions not to go out there, rather to stay away from the area and respect the barricades in order to keep safe. The flood warning extended until Tuesday, when the water should recede.
