The school year is about one month away and LISD said they are receiving positive feedback to their new single gender classrooms.
This year incoming sixth grade students at Lamar Middle School have the option of enrolling in a single gender classroom for math, science, English and social studies.
Students do not have to take single gender classes for all subjects; for example, they can take an all-girls or all-boys math, but take a co-ed science.
Assistant Superintendent for curriculum and instruction, Linda Theret said students would still get the opportunity to interact with all of their peers throughout the day.
"We are certainly wanting to make sure that our students are having that social interaction will all of their peers. They're going to have that in lunch. They are going to have that in band, they'll have it in P.E, they'll have it in health classes."
About 150 students have chosen to take advantage of this opportunity, which is about one-third of the students.
