Our newsroom has been flooded with phone calls about Mexican military presence in Zapata. This comes after reports of a gun fight between Mexican soldiers and unknown assailants on the Mexican border around that area. Right before nine o'clock this morning a gun fight between Mexican military and unknown gun man ensued in Cidudad Guerrero in Mexico. Some fishermen were there as activity from law enforcement stirred up their attention. Fisherman, Ivan Martin said,"we got here daybreak this morning and it was probably ten or eleven we saw a tremendous amount of helicopter activity and patrol boats running up and down the lake." Fisherman Dwayne Loyd said,"we did see a Mexican helicopter flying over the Mexican side then later we saw activity in the cove we were fishing in some Border Patrol agents were patrolling." Leland Plattner, a Zapata resident that lives near the lake, says he didn't hear a gun fight but is well aware of what goes on in the other side."I wouldn't say it's a common occurrence on this side, but it's so common on the other side it's not a wonder it leaks over sometimes." Customs and Border Patrol liaison Efrain Perez said,"whenever something like this happens our international liaison speaks to them to confirm the situation. We immediately dispatch our ground agents to the area along with CBP air and also working in cooperation with agencies in Zapata County." Chief Deputy of Zapata Raymundo Del Bosque says there there were no reports of injuries on the U. S. side and little information is still unknown. "We cant confirm on any calls or an incident happening at the time we were just taking care of the lake and the border." For now Chief Deputy Del Bosque says they will continue patrolling the river and lake as usual making sure there is no spill over of crime from Mexico.
