Spring Breakers Are Cautious About Going To Mexico

Mexico used to be the place to go for spring breakers, until the violence over took our neighboring country.
So we asked college students if they were planning to head across the border for spring break.
Spring break is a time that college students look forward to all year long. Whether they choose to stay in Laredo or go relax on the beach, they want to go somewhere they can have fun and feel safe.
"No, I haven't heard anyone going to Mexico. All I hear about is S.P.I."
This TAMIU student says she is too scared to head across the border.
"My parents told me...I'm from California, and they told me to not go to Mexico. I won't go to Mexico. They said it's really dangerous over there, so I'll never go to Mexico."
Just a few months ago, a young man from Austin went to party in Nuevo Laredo and was beaten by a group of men and found injured the next day in an abandoned warehouse.
As recent as Thursday of this week, there was a shootout across in Nuevo Laredo, forcing people to stay inside their homes."
But that's not stopping everyone from spending their spring break in Mexico.
"I have some cousins that wanted to go, but they're unsure at the moment."
This spring breaker says she has no plans to go to Mexico.
"No, I don't. Personally, I wouldn't take that risk with my life or anyone else."
Another college student who's excited about spring break says he has friends that are going to Cancun, which is a popular destination for spring breakers.
"It's not a stable situation, I wouldn't recommend going in Mexico, but they think it's ok."
People we talked to do say they wish Mexico was safer so they could enjoy it for the holiday.
Some safety tips from the U.S consulate on how to stay safe on trips abroad include not wearing expensive jewelry.
They also remind you to lock you passport, cash and credit cards in your hotel safe.
