School leaders across the state, including here in Laredo, are keeping a close eye on a ruling involving funding for public education.
A state district judge ruled that the way Texas finances public schools is unconstitutional.
That ruling after a trial that lasted 12 weeks.
The judge ruled that the state fails to provide local school districts equal access.
Attorneys representing around 600 public school districts told the judge that the way Texas funds schools is "woefully inadequate and broken."
At issue is five point four billion dollars in cuts to schools and education grant programs.
Those were the cuts imposed by the state legislature in 2011.
The state is likely to appeal the judge's ruling
