February: Teen Dating Violence Awareness

Violence among teen dating is something adolescents tend not to share with an adult.
A local organization has chosen the month of February to raise awareness among Laredo teens.
Our Carolina Garcia, has our story.
A student says, "Most of them it's their first relationship and they think that's normal behavior in relationships. Our job is to help them understand that's not the way a healthy relatinship works.
A recent study states 1 in 3 girls is abused and that at least 1 in every ten, has been hit by her partner.
City officials proclaimed the month of February as "Teen Dating Violence Awareness and Prevention Month".
Local leaders and students from different high schools attended the ceremony at the City Hall where together they pledged to never condone, or remain silent about any type of teen dating abuse.
SCAN representative stated, “We're educating the adolescents as far as their rights as far as protection orders, where they can go for resources, what is against the law?"
The organization SCAN recruited high school students to help raise awareness of the what we are told many teens suffer, but never tell anyone. "We are focusing on the different signs of violence . Why is the different types of abuse emotional, verbal, physical and sexual"
Something as simple as making too many phone calls trying to control the other partner could be a sign of an abusive relationship.
At a local High School a students said, "Once or twice it's ok but like every single time to the point where ya he's not doing anything, that's abuse. Another student said, "Just think ahead for your future, that is it."
Different events will take place at local high schools throughout the month of February to advice teens on the dangers of an abusive relationship.
