United Independent School District is accepting applications for a new head coaching position available after a successful coach resigned last week. After spending five years with Alexander girl’s basketball, Head Coach Javier Reyes decided to resign from coaching last week. UISD is currently looking for someone to replace him. (David Garcia/ HR assistant superintendent): "We are posting the coaching duties for girls athletics for girls basketball at Alexander High School." His resignation comes as a surprise, at the end of this season, Coach Reyes told Pro Eight Sports he was looking forward to coaching next year's team of young women. "We've got another group of juniors and sophomores and freshman who are also who are very good. We're going to be around for a while. Hopefully next year we'll show up and win a game or two and surprise some people in San Antonio." After leading the girls to the sweet 16 last season, Coach Reyes also has four district 29-5A titles under his belt, and with very little notice, officials are saying it was a voluntary resignation. "Let me say this officially on record, it was a voluntary resignation. There is nothing to the contrary and it is through his formal requests that this particular action took place." After research, Roma officials confirmed that Javier Reyes was terminated in the late 1990's, when six students went in front of the Roma ISD school board and said they had been subjected to comments of sexual nature. UISD officials said that had no bearing on his employment here in Laredo. "Let me say this. Before anyone applies for employment with UISD, we have adopted school policies that require us as human resources to screen applicants for those thing relative to prior employment, criminal history and reference information." Reyes is still supposed to come back and be a teacher at Alexander High School. Calls to Reyes were not returned.
