Uni-Trade July 4th Celebration Canceled

By KGNS News

After the Laredo Roses were not allowed to play at Uni-Trade Stadium this weekend, officials have announced another event that has been canceled because of certificate of occupancy issues.
Miscommunications between the city and Uni-Trade officials seems to be a problem that is preventing events to happen in Uni-Trade Stadium.
The stadium was granted only a temporary certificate of occupancy by the building department because the stadium is not complete.
( Erasmo Villarreal\city building department): "At this point because the facility is not completed, there are portions only that are allowed to be used."
After the Laredo Roses were told they were not allowed to play in Uni-Trade stadium, the 4th of July celebration was canceled Monday.
(Ruben Garza\Laredoan): "Oh they canceled it completely, that sucks."
(Art Valdez\Laredoan): "Oh yea, I think we should have it."
The city has only approved for baseball games only to played in the stadium, saying they want to protect tax payers investments.
(Carlos Villarreal/ City Manager): "That's a major, major investment of the City of Laredo. My obligation is to make sure we have the stadium in tip-top shape for this year and many years to come."
(Mark Schuster\CEO Uni-Trade Stadium): "It's disappointing. We thought we had the right to schedule other events in the ballpark and the city says we can't. Just like today we canceled another event, our 4th of July festival, free fireworks display. Because we're being told we can only play baseball games."
City Manager, Carlos Villarreal said there are other facilities to hold concerts and other events, but the reason for Uni-Trade was primarily for baseball and he does not want to ruin the field for the Lemurs.
"If your growing flowers and you have someone trample on them, you're never going to know how beautiful they are going to look until you finalize and let them grow accordingly."
City officials said even after the stadium is complete, they do not want other events scheduled in the stadium during baseball season but said they have to make an agreement with Uni-Trade Stadium CEO Mark Schuster.
