VIDA Demands San Miguel's Resignation

By KGNS News

The Voices of Democratic Action has had enough from a certain city council member.
As they wore their "resign" signs and spoke as to why they think San Miguel should step down, they were interrupted by the city's lawyer.
"….Making public accusations in an improper forum is unprofessional and since they are unproven they are absolutely derogatory."
"If there is anyone who's made derogatory remarks, it's yourself."
A heated argument between Dr. Hector Farias and city attorney Raul Casso broke out in city chambers as Dr. Farias called out Charlie San Miguel for appointing Adolfo Campero to the ad hoc committee.
"Campero works for Edwardo Garza, he gets paid by Edwardo Garza. San Miguel works for Garza. That's a big conflict of interest."
Campero stood in front of city council to defend himself on not having a conflict of interest.
San Miguel said Campero was chosen because of his background.
"…He was like the perfect match. He's got the legal background and he’s a good ethical man of high value and high ethics."
VIDA and other citizens said they are not happy with the ad hoc committee's ethics ordinance because some things have been weakened due to conflict of interest.
"One of my main concerns, and I'm sure of other people is that it (ethics code) allows for donations from private sectors and I think it creates a conflict of interest. Because right away it’s hitting the influence of private sector against the tax payer."
City manager Carlos Villarreal said the only big changes they have made is that members will still be allowed to solicit for events.
"….Events that are in the best interest in the city of Laredo and we still have the right to solicit donations. I know that if we were to indicate to the public that we are having a reception in Washington for example, and it's going to cost $50,000-$60,000 and we are using tax payer money, obviously its not going to go over too well."
VIDA brought a list of all the violations they claim San Miguel has violated, but he said, he has done nothing wrong.
"If I was involved in any wrong doing, I would step down, I would resign. There is no wrong doing."
"I thought it was inappropriate. It's not the time or the place for that. Like the attorney had said it has to be done professionally. But it's not right to attack someone, especially someone who has done so much for the city, the community."
"The accusations are false. They are absolutely completely false."
The introductory ordinance for the code of ethics was heard Monday night.
City officials said it was adopted with some amendments but were unable to comment further because the meeting is still in session.
Officials said earlier Monday they expect the ordinance to go into affect by the second week in September.
