Schools around Laredo were recently challenged to create a billboard that promoted the environment. Each school from elementary to high school had to used recycled material in constructing the project. The winning school received an award and a tree courtesy of home depot. Members of the Rio Grande International Study Center paid a visit to Alma Pierce Elementary to announce the first place winner of the contest. A plaque was given out to the school and a live oak tree was planted in the entrance of the school. The school's bulletin board centered on the importance of protecting the Rio Grande. Alma pierce won first in the elementary level.
