They’re among the most controversial and secretive weapons in the war on terror. Unmanned drones used to strike Al-Queda targets worldwide.
“The strikes are legal. They are ethical. They are wise,” responded government officials.
The White House came under fire after documents showed drones were used to kill US citizens who were operational leaders for Al-Queda.
But, drones are being used in places closer to us than you may know.
They are in eleven states throughout the country, including Texas.
That has privacy right advocates alarmed with the idea that anyone could be tracked by a drone with a camera, facial recognition technology or even eavesdropping devices.
“My view is that the government works for us. Government is there to serve us and protect us, not to watch us,” commented Senator Joe Negron.
Now, law makers in Virgina have passed the nations first restrictions on drones.
In our area there is a different view.
“I think that would be a good idea. Protecting people and saving lives, because they are used on the border,” Laredoan Vanessa Solis said.
It’s not known exactly where these drones are located.
But, they’ve been used along the border since 2005, as drug war activity remains high in Mexico.
“I think as long as I’m not taking a shower and it's not looking at me its good. If you don’t have the wrong people looking, I dont see why it matters,” said Jordan Tomerlin.
The small crafts so secretive most people we spoke to about the issue are too unaware to be bothered by the use of drones.
“I assume if we have them here it’s for the better of people. I dont think i know exactly what they are,” said another resident.
