Home Owners Request Speed Bumps In Neighborhood

By KGNS News

It's an update to a story we first brought you last night.
A 20 year old drunk driver is arrested after wrecking into a mailbox in north Laredo.
But it's not the first time something like this has happened.
Our Lauren Kendrick explains in our top story at five.
City Councilman for District 5, Roque Vela, Jr, surveys the damage from a late night accident that occurred Sunday night. A twenty year old drunk driver plowed into a mailbox. Witnesses say that mailbox and a white mini van were the only things that helped the vehicle come to a stop.
"To have people drinking and driving at all is just unacceptable. To have twenty year olds out in streets that could have damaged homes children and damaged private property is a big issue."
Home owners in this quiet neighborhood have been asking for something to be done about the wreckless drivers in their neighborhood for a while now since similar situations like this have happened before.
"A pile of debris stands where a mailbox used to all because of a drunk driver. City Councilman Vela says he agrees speed bumps need to be placed on the street to prevent any further accidents from happening."
"Just standing here for the past couple of minutes, I think some speed bumps are absolutely appropriate here."
Luckily no one was injured in this recent accident. The underage drunk driver was arrested on DWI charges. Vela says the issue of drunk driving needs to be dealt with at home. He can get speed bumps put into the neighborhood but knows that won't take care of the whole issue.
"Speed bumps aren't going to deter drinking and driving. Drinking and driving happens on a personal level. People need to take more responsibility."
Standing on the sidewalk of Nye Drive for five minutes was long enough for Vela to see first hand the need to improve the neighborhood.
"Yeah we're dodging traffic here."
Vela says he has no time line as to when the speed bumps will be placed in the neighborhood.
He says he is going to bring up the item to city council and find some money to deal with the situation.
