Jogging and Cycling Path in Danger of Shutting Down

By KGNS News

A popular bike spot for joggers and cyclist could shutdown soon after a citizen said he owns the property.
The owners now want to put up a gate to prevent cyclist and joggers from exercising on the road angering many people.
Valerie Bragg has the details.
Bikers and joggers have been exercising along this part of Del Mar for many years.
Luis Martinez is one of those athletes who exercise here five days a week and doesn't like the idea of not having the road to bicycle on.
"It's going to be a major setback because we have been seeing the biking community is growing a lot. So it's going to be a major turn down for all of us who are practicing this sport."
Fellow cyclist said there is no other safe place in the city to ride their bikes.
"There’s very few bike lanes in town, and the few bike lanes that we have are dirty and full of glass. You'll get punctured within 100 yards."
County officials said they invested $500,000 dollars into the path to have some of the road paved.
We are told there are markings along the road where they want to put up the gate. Not everyone is against the gate.
"We're dodging them all the time. Wait until about 6:30, 6:15 to see them coming and going. Some of them have lights some of them don't have lights and they could be run over easy by a car."
But Martinez said he doesn't want his fellow bikers to be left stranded.
"Laredo cycling association has signed a petition to request the owners to keep at least one of the lanes open for cycling to be open."
There has also been a Facebook group that has started in protest of the gate being put-up.
Commissioner Jaime Canales said the county has sent a letter to the owners requesting they not block off the road and say they will fight for it to stay open.
