People in Laredo can ring in the new year knowing that Laredo is safe. That's according to new statistics released by the Laredo police department.
"The crime rate overall looks like it's on a downward trend. at least collectively on a three year trend."
Something they are proud to report is the number of homicides. In 2011 there were eleven. This year, there were only ten.
"As a matter of fact, we haven't had a reported homicide since June."
It's not only homicides that are down.
"Out of six major categories of uniformed crime reported, four out of six are all down this year."
This is a graph showing the rate of crime. It shows that burglary of vehicles is down 2%, burglary of habitation is down 12%, robbery is down 6%, and with the largest drop, auto theft is down 20%. In fact the last time there was an increase in crime was back in 2008. Baeza says this should help with the perception of Laredo.
"The border cities are actually statistically safer than any other city in the United States, despite the fact that the perception is different."
