Residents React to Wetlands Decision

By KGNS News

City council will move forward with selling the Wetlands, so we spoke to some residents to get their reaction. At today's Kiwanis club meeting, Director of the Rio Grande International Study Center, Tricia Cortez, was the guest speaker. She says she went there to talk about upcoming bird watching events, but the topic quickly turned to the wetlands and town center.

Resident, Rey Ortiz, says, “I think there's room for co-existence. From what we've learned today about birding and economic impact, Laredo needs as much economic impact as we can get.” Another resident, Jorge Sudillo, thinks, “Laredo needs the economic development, no question about it, but at what cost? We have to incorporate nature into the cost of the development. I think both can co-exist. It's a project that we need, but we also need nature. That's a very valuable asset.” Meanwhile, Ramiro Barrera says, “I think it's a good idea, however I believe they could work both ways. Basically what we need to do is preserve our nature.”

Barrera went on to say he thinks it would be nice to build a bike trail around the Wetlands. Nevertheless, the vote at last night's city council meeting to sell was unanimous.
