The salvation army has kicked off it's annual kettle drive.
And they're asking for more support this year.
This year's kettle drive got started a week later than usual and salvation army officials say it's going to take a little more giving for them to reach their goal.
It's the crisp sound that seems to remind us Christmas is right around the corner.
And the salvation army hopes it will put you in a giving mood.
The tradition of the kettle drive got started by a salvation army officer 100 years ago.
“He took a kettle that they used to cook. people started putting money in it.”
A century later, the kettle drive is helping purchase 2,000 toys for Laredo children as well as food and clothing.
And they admit it will be harder this year to hit their goal of 48-thousand dollars.
People have tightened their budgets.
But Ortiz says any change will do.
A little penny may not seem like much but this little penny can go a long way.
“It makes a lot of difference. The few pennies makes a difference believe me when the kettles come in its almost half and half coins and dollar amounts.”
Ortiz hopes everyone will give what they can and think of others.
