A would-be robber leaves empty handed after trying to hold up a local motel.
It happened early Thursday morning at the Monterrey Inn in the 4800 block of San Bernardo.
According to police, a man wearing a mask and a green coat came in and demanded money from the clerk at the front desk. He had his hand in his pocket, as if he had a gun. The clerk refused and the suspect ran off, getting into a suburban.
A security officer saw the suspect leaving and waved down a passing police officer. The suspect crashed into a car parked at the valero across the street. He then tried driving through the nearby What-A-Burger parking lot but eventually crashed into a tree.
He tried to flee on foot, but was caught and arrested.
The man behind all this: 19-year-old Anthony Joseph Stellema. He's charged with robbery, evading arrest with a motor vehicle and accident causing damages.
In the end, he came out of it empty handed.
