A home in South Laredo has become a target for speeders. Three cars have made their way through the home’s front yard in the past two years—two of those accidents happening this year alone. As our Concetta Callahan reports, it’s not only a threat to the home, it’s a safety hazard for the family’s twin boys who love to play outside.
“This is the third time it’s already happened. It’s twice in one year and, at the start of the new year, it happened again,” says Frank Ybarra, whose home has already been hit three times. Frank Ybarra is talking about this car that plowed through his family’s front yard. It’s becoming a frequent sight for the Ybarra family. This is the second car that has come through the family’s front gate this year, and we’re only in February.
“They’re always driving and wanna take this turn too fast. I suggest they put a speed bump,” says Ybarra. Ybarra believes speed played a factor in today’s accident. Frank says drivers are speeding no matter what time of day it is. This car smacked into their brick fence in broad daylight while the kids were outside playing. “I got kids and they’re always playing outside and I’m scared one of these dayas it’s gonna be worse,” says a resident. “The kids say even a nice game of catch can be dangerous because they never know when another car is going to come flying through their yard,” she adds. Frank Ybarra says, “It’s scary because the moment it hits we could barely get inside and, for a few minutes or seconds, it hits and it’s scary.” Joshua Ybarra says, “When the first time the car crashed my dad was scared that if we were outside we would of been hit." And since this is the third car to come crashing through the yard, the Ybarra family knows better than to just let the car be hauled away. And that’s why it’s still here. “They had no insurance; no nothing. So the officer told me if you want to you can make arrangements with them or keep the car, so i'm keeping the car," says Ybarra. "i dont want this guy to say we cant afford it, we cant pay it, so either you pay me or i keep the car." Nonetheless, Ybarra says the problem needs to be solved. He says he cant keep worrying everytime his kids go outside to play whether or not a car is going to hit them or come too close to hitting them. Concetta Callahan, Pro8News.”
Now, that homeowner has tried contacting the councilman in his district concerning this problem. When he called today, he was told that the councilman was away at a meeting. We are also working on getting a hold of the councilmember incharge of that district to see if he can help solve this family's problem. And, as always, if you have a problem you'd like the problem solvers team to look into.... just give us a call at 727-8888... we'll be happy to help you or guide you to someone who can.
