Summer time brings fun in the sun for just about everyone here in Laredo, but not for one family in Central Laredo.
What was supposed to be summer fun has turned into a summer nightmare and a health problem one mother never knew lurked in her water.
"Last night I started filling this above ground pool for my son and my niece and I noticed the water was coming out yellow."
It’s a brand new pool: never been used.
According to the display box the bottom of the pool is white. Esther says it was white until she started filling it with water, yucky yellow water.
“Esther has a child with special needs so she tries to find activities he can do close to home. But it doesn't even look like he'll be able to enjoy this pool cause the water doesn't look safe at all."
"It’s yellow and I wanted to get in."
Hearing word of the problem, councilman for her district, Juan Narvaez showed up immediately, but he still wasn't sure the water was yellow.
"Looking at it you do agree the water is yellow, correct? Basically the water is not yellow. It’s the bottom surface of the pool. That’s why I was questioning them earlier how long has the water been in the pool? Sometimes with the heat the water is heated with chlorine. As you can see it’s an open lot and dust got into the pool overnight."
"I still haven't done the chlorine treatment because of this. I don’t want to have my kids running around or swimming in dirty, yellow water, dingy water."
"They say it's safe to drink our tap water and I take a shower in this and we wash out clothes in this and it's like no, no let me make a phone call to get some answers."
"Do you think that water is safe? I’m not an expert in water but according to David it's safe."
David is the service worker Councilman Narvaez called out to treat the water.
"Would you drink water like that?”
“I’d drink it from the faucet but not from the pool."
"I really would like to know if it’s safe for my children, my son to go in there."
The City took water samples from the woman's home for testing.
In the meantime, Esther is dumping the water and waiting to refill the pool when she is certain the water is safe.
