The Alexander bulldogs began the season with high expectations and while they may not have lived up to their #3 ranking in the regular season, all that can go away with a great postseason.
The playoffs would start off rough with the bulldogs trailing Edinburg North 4-0 after 1/2 an inning in a loser out elimination game. That's when catcher and senior leader Danny Benevides stepped up.
"He got us in a huddle after that first inning and talked to us. He said that wasn't us and he wanted us to come out better and we did." (Rudy Gaona, Bulldog right fielder)
After that the Bulldogs rattled off 16 unanswered runs on their way to a 16-4 victory, Setting up an Area Round game with old foe PSJA.
“I know there's a lot of pressure on it being one game but we can do it. We faced them last year and they're about the same team."
"We have to come out firing because i know their pitcher is pretty good. He's undefeated and errors will cost us in the playoffs." (Gabe Sanchez, Bulldog 1st baseman)
"We've played in those elimination games before the last two years, and these kids have been involved in a lot of playoff types in the pony and little league and i don't think they'll be fazed." (Mario Garcia, Bulldog Head Coach)
The Bulldogs know another single elimination game won't be easy but they are determined to live up to the standards they have set with back to back regional final appearances.
“We haven't had that much success this season but i know we'll be fine in the playoffs if we keep doing what we're doing."
"We surprised a lot of people last year and this year we've had some injuries and we've gotten over them and hopefully we can continue doing what we've done in the past two years."
Alexander will face off with Pharr-San-Juan-Alamo on Friday night as part of an Area Round double header at Uni-Trade Stadium. First pitch for the bulldogs and bears is scheduled for 8 pm, following the United game against Weslaco.
