The Alexander baseball team started the season with a #3 ranking in the state and expectations were high. Injuries and early losses could have derailed their season, but a strong mental attitude would not allow that to happen.
"The injuries had us back a little bit and we struggled but we came back and got stronger." (EJ Garcia, Bulldog Pitcher/Outfielder)
"That set us back at the beginning of the year but we've been able to move the kids around. A couple of the kids are playing out of position but they've done a good job including a couple of freshman up the middle that have been out standing." (Mario Garcia, Bulldog Head Coach)
For Alexander there is youth throughout the program, but it has been the steadying force of seniors EJ Garcia, Danny Benevides and Gustavo Hernandez that guided the Bulldogs through their rough stretch.
"Mental toughness along with team chemistry plays a huge part on the way we perform and i really think that we have developed a strong mental toughness."
"We have some guys here that have experienced the last couple years, some guys from last year and they know what it takes to be where we are at right now. It takes everyone at practice going all out everyday to win games. Just practice hard." (Danny Benevides, Bulldog Catcher)
Now as they prepare for their weekend series with United, Coach Garcia isn't ready to let go of this trio.
"They've been a big part of our runs the past couple of years and i hope they leave our program on a good note. And again i hope we continue to have these guys around for another couple of weeks."
Alexander will take on united in the regional quarterfinals beginning Friday night at 7:30 pm at Veterans Field. Doors will open at six with tickets only being sold at the gate the night of the event. Game two and if necessary game three will be Saturday beginning at 5:00 pm again at Veterans Field.
