Canales Camp Kicks off Saturday; Is Finalist for NBA Job

By KGNS News

This weekend will kick off the 4th annual Kaleb Canales "Assist 13" basketball camps here in Laredo. The Alexander graduate and current interim head coach of the Portland Trailblazers will start his camps Saturday, beginning with the freshmen boys camp. Saturday's event will run from 9 am to 3 pm at Alexander High Schools gym. Canales will then take two weeks off before getting to the meat of his Laredo schedule.

The remaining camps will run August 13th-16, with both half and full day camps for kids between the ages of 5-13. For more information and to register your child you can go to assist13.com.

Speaking of Canales, the Oregonian in Portland reported today that the interim head coach is one of four finalists for the Trailblazers permanant job next season. The Laredoan became the first ever Mexican-American head coach in the NBA when he took over for the fired Nate McMillan with 23 games left in the season. During that time his team went 8-15, knocking off playoff teams like Chicago, Memphis and Dallas down the stretch.

Of the other three names, one has regional ties as well, with Mavericks lead assistant Terry Stotts also in the running to go along with Elston Turner and Steve Clifford. All four men are expected to interview with the teams General Manager Neil Olshey next week.
