KGNS Sports Goes 1on1 with a Globetrotter

By KGNS News

The Harlem Globetrotters are known around the world for their fun and entertaining brand of basketball, comedy and showmanship. Earlier this week I had the opportunity to go one on one with “Cheese” Chisolm on the court.

Not many people get the chance to take on a Harlem globetrotter one on one, So passing up this chance would not happen and a win would make for a great story. Before we got started Cheese talked about the history that comes with putting on that red, white and blue uniform.

"I get to carry the torch from Meadowlark Lemon, Curly Neal and people like that. The Harlem Globetrotters, there's so much history behind them and I’m honored to keep the torch lit."

We start with a game to three and after missing my first shot cheese reminds me why fans come to see him play and I watch. Unfazed I decide to use my size, taking the 'Trotter into the post and getting on the board. That would about the end of my hopes for victory, as Cheese starts mugging for the camera it seems his game picks up, draining a three then, following that up with a lay up as all I can do is watch puts an end to the game but not the fun as that's what this team is all about.

"We pride ourselves on doing positive things, we do a lot of good things both on and off the court and we're bringing something that's very positive to the sport of basketball."

Next up is a game of PIG, and after being down a letter early i finally get on the board with a basic under the hoop lay up. I'm not sure if it was legit but I’ll take it. Feeling a little more confident I mock Cheese a little bit, something he takes in stride but could be my doom. Sure enough a couple shots later I lose on of all things a free throw. I wouldn't feel bad for long as Cheese would give me a little reassurance telling me I was not the first nor the last that will lose to him.

"Has any sports anchor ever beaten you?"

"Oh no, I’m undefeated. I'm a Harlem Globetrotter, this is what we do, win ballgames."

The Globetrotters will be in Laredo this Friday night at the Laredo Energy Arena for their “You Write the Rules” Tour. Fans are encouraged to go online to vote for a number of options including the teams using two balls at one time, you can double the points or even introduce a four point shoot that measures out to 35 feet from the hoop. In addition a pink ball will be used for much of the night and pink wristbands will be sold with the proceeds going to breast cancer awareness.
