Last year saw LBJ's football team reach another historic milestone, their first winning season in school history. While that was nice the seniors on the 2012 team say they still have some unfinished business.
"It's a matter of believing in what you are doing and the commitment and sacrifice our kids make during the summer and during the spring." (Oscar Villasenor, Head Coach)
These are words you hear at high schools across the country this time of year, but something about being at LBJ's practice says the kids have bought into this way of thinking.
"It means a lot to the school and the community. We've had a steady incline and we tend to win one more game then the past year, so hopefully we can continue to build on that and keep that tradition going." (Erick Garay, Quarterback)
Adding one more win is almost sure to get l-b-j into the playoffs for the first time in the schools history but to get there they will need more from everyone on the playing field and that starts with Garay.
"He put on about 20 plus pounds muscle wise and speed wise he ran a 4.55 back in may. He's a field general with great vision and his passing game has come along." (Villasenor)
The signal caller says he feels much more confident and relaxed heading into his junior season.
"You are more experienced, you are more confident in yourself. Your more use to the offense, you use to the level of play and you're not that rookie anymore." (Garay)
While the offense was playoff worthy last year the defense struggled at times but coach says their speed and aggression should both be better this season.
"We've lacked speed in the past but i believe this year we are much faster overall then we have been in the past and i know we've gotten stronger and bigger." (Villasenor)
What the defense may lack in experience their star linebacker says they will make up for with will and determination.
“It's a young defense but it's growing up fast and having a good time. We are just having fun out here and going hard every time." (Alfonso Garcia, Linebacker)
The wolves don't just have the playoffs as their goal but a district championship.
"One team all working together to achieve that goal." (Villasenor)
"That's my dream. That's my goal since i was a freshman.” (Garcia)
The Wolves have one more tune up this Thursday against Edcouch-Elsa this Thursday at 7 pm at the SAC. LBJ will open their regular season at Gregory Portland on August 31st.
