One week ago the LBJ softball season looked like it would come to an end in the Area round. Down to their final strike, the Wolves needed a miracle, or more accurately another clutch hit from Daniel Garza, and that's just what they got.
"I was just staying focused, concentrating on what was going on and i just hit the ball hard."
"As soon as I saw d hit the ball I knew it was going out. It was just awesome. We all started crying for joy and celebrating."
Now as they move to the regional quarterfinals, the Wolves face another one game winner moves on loser goes home situation, but don't think for one second that has them rattled.
"I think our girls get up to play those types of games, knowing their backs are up against the wall and I know they are going to give it their best." (Alfonso Calderon, Wolves Head Coach)
"We're going to play like it's our last game, when we go to bat pretend it's your last at bat. When the ball comes to you pretend it's the last out you have to make and just make a play." (Vanessa Reyna, Wolves 1st Baseman)
One thing they do want to change is the slow starts they've been getting off to.
"We have to focus a little more and start in the first inning. We always start hitting in the 6th inning and this game our goal is to start hitting in the 1st inning." (Daniela Garza, Wolves 3rd Baseman)
"The further we get into the playoffs the more difficult it's going to be because the competition is going to be harder and tougher."
But if it comes down to that final strike one more time, they'll take a win however they can get it.
"I'll take a miracle comeback any day and everyday."
"No matter if we down by six or seven runs, LBJ is not going to lose. We're going to come back and beat that team."
The Wolves will square off with Harlingen South tomorrow at TAMUK with first pitch scheduled for seven pm. Meanwhile down in Zapata, the Hawks are in the area round against Sinton High School with game one of their series at seven as well.
