Leopoldo Martinez first took up the sport of boxing at the age of four and it has taken him around the world, but there is one big goal left burning in his fists.
Martinez has won a number of trophies and belts in his 14 Years of climbing into the ring but his passion for boxing is even stronger now than it has ever been.
"As long as you have that dedication, determination, never give attitude, you'll be able to get anywhere. I breathe, eat, sleep boxing. I enjoy the combat, I enjoy fighting, and I enjoy the technique and strategy of the game."
Martinez was chosen as one of only nine boxers to travel to St. Petersburg, Russia for the World Combat games as a part of Team USA's boxing squad.
"There's going to be 15 different kinds of combat sports going on, so it feels pretty good to be a part of it. We've been trying pretty hard to make it to the international team and finally we got our shot and now I have to keep it up, keep working hard."
Martinez sees this as a stepping stone to his ultimate goal of making the Olympics for the Rio de Jinero games in 2016.
"He's fast, he hits hard and he's very intelligent. He's a real intelligent fighter. You hit him once, you don't hit him twice with the same punch. I’m positive he's going to win to go to the Olympics."
"I’d be the first Laredoan, the first Laredo athlete to make an Olympic team, I mean that would be a dream come true."
Martinez will get his first chance to step into the ring at the World Combat Games tomorrow afternoon taking on a boxer out of Russia. He is currently the number two ranked amateur boxer in the 108 pound weight class for team USA boxing.
