Laredoans Gear up for Thanksgiving Races

By KGNS News

Tomorrow morning while many of us will be eagerly anticipating that turkey dinner, a number of Laredoans will be participating in one of the cities two annual Thanksgiving day runs.

33 years ago, the Sanchez family started the Guajolote 10K race and it has become synonomous with Thanksgiving for many Laredoans.

"My father started it and now it's myself and now my daughter. Year after year we try to keep everyone in good health. That's the main key."

While the older version of the two races looks to promote a healthy lifestyle, the other race in Laredo aims to give back to those in need during this time of the year.

"We help mainly battered women and children, from around the area and those that won't have a meal for this day. We've provided meals for about 100 families from the proceeds of this race."

Organizers of the Guajolote say their race stretches beyond just the borders of Laredo, with runners coming from all over the US and Mexico.

"We have people that have registered from Washington DC, Killen Texas, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon."

Both organizers say their races continue to grow each and every year.

"Last year we had 489 runners and this year we are hoping to hit that 500 mark. We are very, very hopeful."

If you are interested in participating in either of these races, both will be taking registrations beginning at 7 am tomorrow. For the Guajolote 10k race, the cost to enter is $25 with prizes and medals to be given to runners. To enter you can go to Hamilton Trophies at 1320 Garden Street.

For the 5th annual Race for a Cause, you can sign up for the adult 5k or 10k, both races will be $30. Any students signing up will cost $10. Entries for that run are at the Little People Schoolhouse at 603 Shiloh. Both races are scheduled to start at 9 am.
