Montes Earns TKO in First Round

By KGNS News

It was a big weekend for local professional boxer John Montes, as the Laredoan fought in Houston on Friday night. Montes was able to run his professional record to 4-2 after scoring a technical knockout on Christian Chapa. Montes was giving up five lbs. to the bigger fighter but was able to dominate his opponent, knocking down Chapa three times in the 1st round. The Laredoan didn't only beat Chapa, but put him down in his own hometown, in fromt of family and friends. Montes says he felt a little bad about that, but in the end it's all a part of the sport.

"You could hear crickets and the boos pretty much but it comes with the territory. It's kind of overwhelming at first but focus is basically what gets you the victory. Staying focused and not letting it get by you. It's just you and him and that's it."

Montes is not sure when his next fight will be, but he will be heading back to Kingsville this week to train.
