Mustangs Building through Non-District Play

By KGNS News

Friday night saw two of Laredo's top high school basketball teams go head-to-head for the 2nd time in less then a week. Unlike when Nixon and United met at the Border Olympics in the 3rd place game, this time the Mustangs came out on fire, leading by 25 at the half. Even though the lead was trimmed to three points late in the game, Nixon would hold on for the 75-69 victory, earning a split with the Longhorns. Now the Mustangs get ready for a much improved and fiesty United South team tomorrow night. With Nixon being led by Ricky Arana, Rolondo Bustamante and Phillip Hughes, the Mustangs are ready to continue their fight through the non-district season.

"Holding onto a lead against a team like United that is very experienced, tall and physical and holding against United is a good thing. I think we grew up that night and that's what I wanted. It was a non-district game but I think we grew up a lot against United."

Tomorrow's game between the Mustangs and Panthers is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 pm at Nixon High School.
