A number of UISD swimmers are back in the pool after another successful district meet over the weekend in Corpus. In all 72 swimmers from the four schools competed and 44 of them will be moving on to regionals in Brownsville. Two athletes stood out above the rest of the district with the Bulldogs bringing home both "Swimmer of the Year" titles.
Martin Martinez was named "Male Swimmer of the Year" after winning the 200 yd. IM and the 100 yd. Butterfly. He was also a part of two relay teams that took 2nd place, as the Bulldogs finished just behind Corpus Christi King for the top overall spot.
His teammate Ayeesha Mohammed won "Female Swimmer of the Year," after winning the 100 yd. Butterfly, 100 yd. Breaststroke and as one of the members of the 400 yd. Freestyle relay.
While it was a good weekend, coach Paul Kane says his kids will need to pick it up at regionals. "Regionals are going to be a lot more difficult, with a lot more swimmers we will be competing with and the top swimmer in each event moves on to state in three weeks in Austin." (Paul Kane, UISD Swim coach)
The regional meet will be this Saturday in Brownsville, good luck to all 44 swimmers competing in that meet.
