To start the season the United baseball team was not expected to be at the top of the district standings but after going a perfect 12-0, that is exactly where they finished. The Longhorns came out of the gates on fire, winning the Border Olympics tournament and never looked back on their way to a 28-1-1 overall record and a top three ranking in the state according to the coaches association. Now they enter the bi-district round of the UIL playoffs and know that there is a decent amount of pressure on their backs and if they slip up the whole season will be for not.
"There's a lot of pressure because we have big targets on our back and everyone wants to come after and get us. So we gotta keep working at it. I've learned from past experiences that it doesn't matter your ranking, in the playoffs everyone is 0-0. So we have to keep working hard and doing our best every game." (Joel Garza, Longhorn pitcher/infielder)
"We have to go out there and keep playing the game we play and hopefully come out with the w at the end. We're not finished right now. I mean 12-0 is really great but a run deep in the playoffs is probably one of the best feelings you can have." (Sergio Pollorena, Longhorn pitcher/infielder)
United and La Joya Palmview will play a best of three series beginning Friday night right here in Laredo. Game one is scheduled for a seven pm first pitch on Friday at Uni-Trade stadium. The series will then shift to La Joya for game two and if necessary game three on Saturday afternoon.
