United Success Born over Years

By KGNS News

The United Longhorns will play in the sweet 16 for the second straight year, but their story of success begins long before this season ever tipped off.

While many may take the longhorns success for granted the players say it's been four long years of playing together that has gotten them to this point.

“It's a unique team. We're all brothers we've been together and worked hard all summer and all four years and it has paid off this year." (Raul Moreno, United Point Guard)

"They deserve this back to back sweet 16 because they've worked hard for it. They have really sacrificed for team and for one another." (Archie Ramos, United Head Coach)

The hard work included a trip to Orlando over Christmas break, a trip that helped solidify their already strong bonds. It not only helped them off the court but has given them the confidence needed for a deep run in the UIL playoffs.

"We've seen greater talent and we know we can potentially be a state team because we've played against highly ranked teams and players." (Aaron Gonzalez, United Center)

"We're a close group of guys and our defense, our hustle, our commitment, our dedication and i think that all plays a factor in this team."

That dedication to a single unit has given the Longhorns success this season, and while many would be content to make the regional semi-finals for the second straight year the horns say they want more.

"We set out a goal at the beginning of the season to reach the sweet 16 again and we just want to get over that hump and get to the elite 8 and take it to the next level." (Eddie Gonzalez, United Shooting Guard)

"Our kids have stepped up and represented well and are peaking at the right time. That's what is the most fun. Watching their confidence bloom and be ready for the playoffs."

"It'd be a great feeling for us, for our coaches, our families and the city of Laredo. It'd be amazing."

United will get their chance to make Laredo history tomorrow by being the first team since Alexander in 2006 to make the elite eight as they take on Cibolo Steele. That game will tip off at six pm at the University of Texas at Pan American in Edinburg.
