It's been a season for the ages at United, going 28-1-1 so far as they head into the area round of the playoffs. While it's been a great season that has them ranked as the #3 team in the state, they were not highly thought of heading into the year.
"We were picked, not to come in 1st but in 4th, not in our district but in Laredo to be exact. It was a firecracker for us to come out and be hot." (Aaron Navarro, Longhorn 2nd Baseman)
Instead of worrying about what others thought the team decided to play what they call the “United Way”.
"Putting a bunt down, moving the runner over, hitting to whatever side you need to. Mainly not focusing on the opponent but just you and the ball." (Charles Villa, Longhorn Outfielder)
"Always come out with enthusiasm, heart and desire. You always have to come out strong, come out playing against the game. You have to be prepared and focused and treat the game, respect it."
But most of all it has to do with ignoring the team across from them and focusing on only the factors they can control.
"Coach always tells us you never play against your opponent. You always play against the game of baseball. Catch the ball, field the ground ball, throw it, catch it. Your routine plays need to be made to come out with a win."
"It makes it a lot easier for them. They realize it's the same game we've been playing since we were 7 or 8 years old, we're just a little older now and have nicer uniforms." (JJ Gomez, Longhorn Head Coach)
"All our hard work and our talent, I don't think it's luck. I think we prepared ourselves right and we've done the hard work to be here."
The Longhorns will need to continue working hard this week as they prepare to take on Weslaco this weekend in a three game series starting Friday night at Uni-trade stadium with a first pitch of 5:30 pm. The series will then shift to UT-Pan American on Saturday morning for game two and if necessary game three.
