There is nothing that laredo loves more than local high school football...and this year we have reason to be focused on Alexander High School. Quarterback Jerry Lopez, is ranked number eight in the nation and number one in the district for passing yards. Alexander is preparing to square off with Eagle Pass in a critical game that would determine if they can make it to the playoffs. Our Flip Romero met with Lopez during practice, to see if he was ready to put his skills to the test. On the practice field Jerry Lopez is a silent assassin going over plays for his teams next district match up with Eagle Pass. “Our goal is to make the playoffs and win in the playoffs.” But on game days he's a fierce predator who's a defensive nightmare. So far he's racked up almost 2900 yards with 31 touchdowns this season, eight of them coming in one game alone. It makes sense why he is ranked number 8 in the nation for passing yards on a team that supports and rallies off his energy. “It feel's good to have someone with such a great talent as Jerry, he's always working with the whole team.” “I want to thank the team because its not only my part of it, it's the offensive line for protecting, the receivers for catching, and the play calling of course and the defense for stopping them.” Not many players can say their mentor and coach is their father. “Seeing him grow up as a little boy and all that, just throughout his life flag football pop warner and all that it seems like it was yesterday when we were doing all those things.” “The only one way to face adversity is to live through it, and he's done that and I've learned more from him in that aspect.” Despite his accomplishments, Lopez remains modest and ambitious. “I would like to see myself as one of the good QB'S, a great QB any any from college because all these QB'S are great It doesn't matter what school you go to, to get to that level is a good accomplishment.” Flip Romero Pro 8 Sports.
