Expectations Set for 2012 Bulldogs
The Alexander Bulldogs are gearing up for another football season, coming off a district title season. .
The Bulldogs have seen quite a few changes in the off-season, but they said their expectations aren't any less.
It was a day of learning for the Alexander Bulldogs, as they took the field for the first time this season.
With less than a handful of returning starters to the team, this off-season was a rebuilding process. They said they are used to the change.
"We kind of just look at everyone and say this is their position, they earned it. It's a matter of them executing it so, it's no different for us."
Only two starters will be returning on the offensive side of the ball.
Senior Alex Bryand will fill in the quarterback roll this year, despite not playing in that position since his freshman year.
Alexander's obvious offensive leader wears the number 28 and his name is Xavier Skaggs.
The running back is entering his fourth year on the varsity squad and averaged 72 yards per game last year with eight touchdowns.
"I think Xavier is more reading than what we think. He's a fourth year starter. We're hoping his experience and expertise at the position is really going to be an asset to us."
Head coach Joel Lopez has four returning starters on the defense, but no set leader has stood out.
After seeing the team in their first scrimmage, coach Lopez said the defense might need some adjusting.
"Defensively, you know we've got some holes to fill and we got to make some adjustments there. But it's a little bit more difficult to come into a scrimmage when you're on the defensive side of the ball because you don't know anything about the other team."
The Bulldogs finished the season as the district champs last year going a perfect 10-0 in regular season and made it to the regional round of the play-offs before taking a crushing defeat.
Despite big changes to Alexander’s line-up, their expectations this year are no less.
"We expect to win all games and hopefully have a shot at the run to get in the finals and regionals and see who it goes."
The Bulldogs also recruited basketball player Nolan Wilson to play a wide-receiver position.
Alexander will open up their season at home against Alice next Friday.
Game time will be 7:30 p.m. and will be played at the SAC.
