Even though summer is here for high school students, one United Longhorn had her mind on college today and taking the next step in her athletic career. Kimberly Kuriata officially signed her national Letter of Intent to participate in track and field for the University of Texas at Pan American. Kuriata will look to be a high jumper while also possibly competing in other events including the hurdles, long jump and triple jump.
It was an emotional afternoon for the Longhorn, who after her dad passed away when she was a freshman, felt like he was there with her today.
"I never wanted anyone to feel sorry for me, so I just went out there and worked hard. I showed how strong I could be and come my senior year I worked hard and made sure that paid off. Just knowing that my father is here, not physically but mentally and in my heart, I don't normally cry but it just hit me."
Kuriata is planning to study nursing at UTPA and will begin her college career this fall in Edinburg.
