The annual Martin/Nixon game is Saturday, but this morning the two teams came together in the spirit of sportsmanship to enjoy breakfast and discuss the game. On display was "The Hammer" which each team plays for and is painted in the winning schools color following the game. This year brings an added wrinkle, as the winning team will guarantee themselves a spot in the 4A playoffs, while the loser will finisht this season next week and have no hope of the postseason.
"It's the oldest rivalry game in Laredo and everything is riding on it do or die. If we win we go to the playoffs and that's the great thing about it."
"Since this is my senior season, I would love to beat Nixon. I would love to get the hammer at our school painted red and white, the way it is supposed to be."
Kickoff of this contest is not until Saturday at 7 pm, but officials with the district urge fans to get there early, as they expect a large crowd.
