With Alec Salas being lost for the season, the United Longhorns will turn to a former wide receiver to guide their team back to the district championship. Derek Esparza will take over the reigns as the number one quarterback for United. The junior saw little action under center last season, appearing in mop up duty, throwing for 171 yards and a touchdown, while completeing 46% of his passes. He did get on the field in 2011, but as a receivinger, hauling in 67 passes for 833 yards and 15 touchdowns.
While Salas was more of a drop back passer, Esparza brings a different dimension to the position, choosing to make plays with his feet more than his predecssor.
"Him and our running back with have a chance to make things happen in our running game. He's also very athletc, they are going to have to do a great job of containing him and keeping him in the pocket. And I think he's going to be a great passer for us." (David Sanchez, United Head Coach)
"I'm more of a running quarterback, looking to get out of the pocket and making plays and more of an athletic quarterback. Not like Alec, he's a perfect quarterback." (Derek Esparza, United Quarterback)
The Longhorns open district play this Friday in an all-United matchup as they take on the Panthers of United South at the SAC.
