For the 2nd time under Pete Solis Jr., the Nixon Mustangs are headed for the regional quarterfinals in the UIL playoffs. Nixon will take on familar foe Corpus Christi Miller Tuesday, with the winner headed for San Antonio and the region-IV tournament this weekend. To say the Mustangs are hot going into this one would be an under statement, having won 24 games in a row. Two of those victories came over the Miller Buccaneers, with both games being decided by five points or less. Even though they've won twice over their opponent, Nixon knows they cannot take Miller lightly.
"We can't afford mistakes, basically we can't afford missing a lot of shots, can't afford missing layups but that's plenty of the things we're going to work on today." (Rolando Bustamante)
"We're planning a different offensive mentality and we're going to practice it today in practice and it's good. I mean it's different and they haven't seen it. It's going to be a different look and I don't think they're going to be able to defend it." (Ricky Arana)
The all district 31-4A regional quarterfinal is Tuesday night in the Valley, at Weslaco High with tipoff scheduled for 7:30.
