It was an important morning for a pair of Martin Tigers as they signed on the dotted line to play at the college level. Eloy Robles Jr. and Jerry Gaytan are both headed on to play their respective sports at Texas colleges.
Gaytan was a vital part of the Martin soccer team that reached the region IV semifinals. He is now headed for Coastal Bend College, where the coaching staff became enamored with him after watching the UIL playoffs. Gaytan is excited for the challenges that lay in front of him at the next level. "It is something I have dreamed about since middle school. I knew that if I put hard work and dedication into it then someday I would be signing and this is that day. I'm pretty excited to continue into college."
Gaytan's classmate, Robles, is headed for Southwestern University after a stellar three year career on the Tigers offensive line. He says a number of factors led him to the school with it's proiomety to Laredo being one of the biggest drawing points. Robles says he is already anticipating his first game, which could come against former Martin teammates Mark Duron and Rudy Castillo. "I'm already looking forward to the first game, September 7th, which is on my birthday. And we're going to be playing TLU where Mark and Rudy signed. It's going to be weird but I gotta do what I gotta do. It's no longer Martin High School, it's Southwestern University that I'm representing."
